Auricular reconstruction for microtia in areas with previous scars

Abstract

We present a cohort of ten patients with microtia, with a history of scarring in the auricular region from previous reconstructive attempts (8 patients) or otologic surgeries (2 patients), who underwent autologous auricular reconstruction with costal cartilage grafts. Surgical strategies included combined approaches to the scars, skin grafts, and turn-over fascia flaps to complete coverage of the cartilage framework. One complication due to minor partial resorption of the costal graft was recorded. No skin necrosis, infections, or hematomas were reported.
We conclude that auricular reconstruction in unfavorable terrain is a major surgical challenge that can be performed with a low complication rate and adequate results by experienced specialists in referral centers for the management of the disease.
